Miss Ethnic Ireland 2012 Beauty Pageant
Miss Ethnic Ireland 2012: to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and to celebrate the (FGM) Bill passed through the Seanad Ιireann (Irish Senate).
Based on the success of previous fashion shows organised by Ifrah Ahmed, the Ifrah Foundation decided to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, 25 November 2011 by organizing a brief conference and fashion show event. The event aimed to raise awareness of FGM, in particular the status of the yet-to-be-introduced Criminal Justice (Female Genital Mutilation) Bill 2011 introduced by the former Minister for Health and Children. The event was intended to target young African women and men especially.
Miss Ethnic Ireland 2012 Beauty Pageant
Ifrah has worked and presented at events with politicians, health care professionals and ambassadors both in Ireland and in Europe. This event was specifically designed to connect with young people, including young people from female genital mutilation (FGM) practicing communities.
The fashion show was held in The Academy Plaza Hotel 10-14 Findlater Place (off Upper O'Connell St.) and speakers from different organisations, models, musicians and bands and media were recruited and invited. Organised by United Youth of Ireland to raise awareness of FGM on this important date.
This event brought together young people from all over Dublin, many of whom are recent migrants to Ireland, to gather at a social event to which will highlight gender based violence and harmful traditional practices especially FGM in a non-threatening environment. Previous events have combined speakers, live music, DJs, a fashion show, conference speakers on a wide range of topics and an opportunity for young people to meet and socialise.
The event was begun by Derrinho Ngadi, an active member of United Youth of Ireland who introduced the group and their beliefs regarding racism, equality, discrimination, injustice and human rights, as enunciated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Derrinho spoke of how human rights provide us all with the right to be free from slavery and torture, the right to vote, the right to assembly and so on. Derrinho also spoke of the significance of holding the event on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, by illustrating the effects of violence against women both on the women themselves and their families. He emphasised the importance of women as the people who give us life, emphasising that such offences must have repercussions. Derrinho finished his introduction to the evening by quoting Mahatma Ghandi: 'Be the change you wish to see in the rold'...
