Your full-length 14-track American LP, “Rise Again”, will be released in the
United States in January 2012. Tell us as much as you can about “Rise Again”?
This album combines songs from my latest album
released in South Africa this past January (Return to Love) and some classics from my two previous studio albums,
Feel Good and Soul in Mind. There's soul RnB, pop and Afro soul. The music upbeat, it's a real feel good album and
displays everything I'm about.
Releasing an Album in America is no doubt a significant step, but the most important thing is to be able
to break into the US market. Though African artists such as K'Naan, Nneka and Blitz are making waves in the US, breaking into
the US market is often a very tough call. How prepared are you to conquer the US, music wise and to go on to take on
the world?
I have a pretty good team working with me on a management, booking agent and PR level. We are all doing our best to
use all of our available resources to make this work. I guess there's never any guarantee but I have a solid band,
great music and we are supporting the album release with a 45 destination tour across North America. It's daunting
but exciting at the same time. I'm up for the challenge.
Putting together all your four albums, “All My Love” (2003), “Feel Good” (2006), “Soul In Mind” (2008),
“Return to Love” (2011) and “Rise Again” (2012), describe in details Lira's music and its essence?
My American audience are basically meeting me at a point when I've had 10 years of a successful music career. I wanted
to give them a sense of everything I am… I wanted an album that best reflects everything I am. My music is deliberately
positive and upbeat even with the slower songs. I think there's enough negativity out there in the world and I have no
desire to add to it. People seek solace in music and I want mine to be an uplifting experience.
Your first album, "All My Love” was released under Arthur Mafokate's kwaito label, 999.
What was your experience at that start-up stage?
I refer to that experience as my education phase. It was tough but I had to get through it. I had a ground breaking album,
with 8 songs out of a 14 track album on high rotation. The title track “All my Love” reached the number 2 position on our
Billboards, kicking Beyonce's song ...
